RSNE is situated in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq Wəlastəkwiyik (Maliseet), and Passamaquoddy Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1726..
We recognize that African Nova Scotians are a distinct people whose histories, legacies, and contributions have enriched that part of Mi’kma’ki, currently known as Nova Scotia, for over 400 years.
More than 400 years ago, French settlers founded the first permanent European settlement in North America at Port-Royal, here in Nova Scotia. The colony would flourish along the French Bay until 1755 and give birth to this proud, resilient and courageous people: the Acadian people.
